Virginia Institute of Government Update December 2020

By Charles Hartgrove

Thank you for those of you who actively participate in AskVIG listserv.  We have seen an increase in inquiries from member local governments during the last month.  Here are examples of recent topics:

  • Many communities in Virginia have streets named for prominent Civil War era Virginians, battlefields, etc. Please share your locality's policy or criteria regarding changing street names.

  • What are your locality’s rules about employees returning to work after testing positive for Covid-19? In particular, what are the rules concerning an employee who has recovered and is asymptomatic, but other members of their household are currently experiencing symptoms and re-exposing the employee to the virus?

  • For localities under 20,000 which run sanitation service, do you use a fleet tracker on sanitation trucks to track the trucks, routes, etc? If so, who is your vendor and estimated cost per year?

We are looking forward to sharing our new programming in 2021.  We will be announcing the date of our newly developed First-Time Supervisors course before the end of the year.  We will also be announcing dates for other training courses after the first of the year.  These will all be virtual and VIG members will receive a discount.  If you have specific training needs, please reach out to me and we will work with you on developing programming for your organization/community.

We wish you, your families, and communities a peaceful holiday season.
