2021 VLGMA Winter Conference

The 2021 VLGMA Winter Conference is going virtual!

Leading in Challenging Times: Local Impacts of Civil Unrest and A Global Pandemic is the theme of the 2021 VLGMA Winter Conference.  The conference will be held virtually on February 10 – 12, 2021.

2020 has been unlike any other year in modern history.  Collectively, local governments have had to shift quickly to meet the demands of our respective communities while managing a pandemic, civil unrest, and, in some cases, financial crisis.  This conference has been designed with those challenges in mind.

The conference will begin Wednesday, February 10, 2021, in the afternoon with a law enforcement panel of several seasoned police chiefs.   Policing has had a tough year and this session will discuss how equity and inclusion impacts policing as well as being “black and blue”.

Also, the conference will also host an interactive book club discussion on the best seller “White Fragility” by Robin DeAngelo.  White Fragility examines racial inequality, why it is difficult to talk about racism and how to engage more constructively.   Please get your book early!

The conference features a number of local and national keynote speakers and topics, such as:

  • Rebecca Ryan, “Human Spark Plug”, Futurist and Economist – How a Pandemic and Civil Unrest Changed Local Governments

  • Jacqueline Tucker, Race and Social Equity Office City of Alexandria, GARE Consultant – Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE)

  • Dr. Kevin G. McDonald, Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, University of Virginia – Race, Equity, and Inclusion Lessons Learned

  • Police Chiefs from Roanoke City and County, Albemarle, Town of Leesburg and Herndon - Law Enforcement Panel

  • Aubrey Layne, Secretary of Finance – General Assembly Financial Update

A Special Coaching Session has been included for Students/Early Career Professionals to connect with experienced members.  The conference will also include special greetings from Marc Ott, Executive Director, ICMA and a financial update from the General Assembly.

Finally, we are closing the Winter Conference with nationally recognized speaker, Rebecca Ryan.  Ms. Ryan, also known as the “Human Spark Plug”, is a futurist and economist and will discuss how the pandemic and civil unrest has changed the way we work – forever!

Registration is open.  We look forward to “seeing” everyone.

Winter Conference Co-Chairs: Valmarie H. Turner, Assistant County Administrator, Loudoun County and Richard L. Caywood, P.E., Assistant County Administrator, Roanoke County

UNITE: Continuing the Conversation

Sessions and gatherings designed to engage the local government community in deep discussion and active reflection about top issues in the profession.

In light of the COVID-19 health crisis and to prioritize the well-being and safety of our members, exhibitors, sponsors, and partners, ICMA launched its first ever digital event that took place September 23-26.

Now that September 23-26 has passed, ICMA is pushing forward on a new initiative titled, UNITE: Continuing the Conversation. We find it more important than ever to foster discussion about the ever-changing issues in our communities. To that end, we will host a series of conversations on Friday, November 13 which will explore three different themes: (1) bridging the digital divide; (2) key leadership and management challenges for the remainder of 2020; and (3) racial equity and social justice.

Here’s how it works:

If you have and are already registered for UNITE, you get to come back to the UNITE platform on Friday, November 13 using the credentials that were emailed for the September 23-26 event. No other registration is required and we will send you a follow up email with more details about the event and access soon.

If you are not registered for UNITEregister today and you will get access to the 200+ on-demand sessions showcased during September 23-26 PLUS continue the conversation with your local government peers on Friday, November 13 as we’ll be offering even more sessions to learn from!

Our mission is to bring local government professionals together from around the globe to learn from each other and address the new realities of our communities. UNITE is going beyond just September 23-26. We are providing all local government leaders and professionals with a place where they can stand together as a profession.

FREE COACHING WEBINAR: Talent Management in the 21st Century: Growing, Attracting, and Retaining Your Best

ICMA Coaching Program Webinar Series

The days when employees were hired right out of college and stayed with the same company until they retired are long gone, and yet many organizations still follow the same talent management process from thirty years ago. Organizations must re-imagine best practices for  attracting, growing, and retaining talent in this age of technological advancement.

What we'll cover:

  • How can organizations attract and retain talent?

  • Should talent be grown from within the organization?

  • Is there a lack of clear guidance and general objectives about talent management in the Human Resources field?

We'll be using webinar tools (including real-time questions and live polling) to make this a great opportunity for audience interaction.

ICMA-CM: This webinar meets Practice 13 (Human Resources Management and Workforce Engagement) of ICMA’s Practices for Effective Local Government Leadership.

Preferred browsers for accessing the webinar: Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

Webinar Sponsor: ICMA-RC, ICMA Premier Level Strategic Partner
