Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Award Process Begins Soon

By Derek Stamey, Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Committee Chair

In the past year local government management team members worked innumerable hours and took on new responsibilities and roles to help their communities with pandemic response.

Each year VLGMA acknowledges the work of a deputy or assistant who has demonstrated outstanding performance, particularly with a special project or during a period of unique conditions or circumstances with the Marcia Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Award.  Deputies and assistants are nominated by their administrator or manager for this award.

The years of 2020 and 2021 have presented unique conditions and circumstances, and the Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Award Committee believes there are many deputies and assistants whose work during these times would make them excellent candidates for the award.

The award process was paused in the spring of 2020 given the local pandemic response.  The Mashaw Award Committee is pleased to re-start the nominations process this spring, with the opportunity to recognize up honorees with the award to cover the years of 2020 and 2021.  The award presentation will be conducted during the VLGMA annual conference in June.

The  Marcia Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Award honors the memory of Marcia Mashaw, an assistant town manager of Blacksburg whose outstanding work on behalf of the communities she served during her too-short career and her active participation in VLGMA leadership and activities.  VLGMA created this award to honor her and her many accomplishments in the local government profession and as a VLGMA member.

To be considered for the Mashaw Outstanding Assistant Award, the deputy or assistant must be a VLGMA member.

Our committee will be emailing the nominations form and information to all VLGMA-member managers and administrators during March.  Watch your inbox for this information!
