Tim’s Thoughts June 2024

When Pat Pate accepted his new position in Winston Salem N.C. I called to congratulate him as he had the opportunity to go back home and manage in a great city. Because of Pat’s love of our organization our conversation quickly developed into putting together a transition plan. Pat had done a great job as President of our organization and I wanted to ensure that we kept that momentum with his departure. I am grateful that the Executive Board had faith in me and allowed me to step back in as President to fulfill Pat’s term. This would allow all of the existing officers a full year in their respective positions and with their committees and would allow for a smooth transition this year as Deborah Kendall is prepared to take the Presidents role. Our organization is so fortunate to have the leaders that serve on our Executive Board and as officers of the Board.

The additional six months as President of our great association has been extremely fulfilling for me. I had the opportunity to allow our Senior Advisors to share with the association their best practices, tips for success, and most importantly what to stay away from. Each monthly newsletter shared the views of a different Senior Advisor and I want to personally thank them for sharing with us. Our Senior Advisors are a valuable asset to our association and are willing to help in any way that you may need.

We had an excellent winter conference in Roanoke and I thank Cody Sexton and Natalie Guilmeus for all of their hard work as conference co-chairs. A special thanks to Danny Davis for his work as the Third Vice President in helping coordinate with the conference chairs not only for the winter conference but the summer conference as well. All of the sessions at the conference were fantastic, however if you have the opportunity to see David Conmy (Sussex County), David Moorman (Botetourt), or Cody Sexton (Town of Vinton) take a moment and thank them for their presentation entitled “Leadership as a Member of the LGBTQ Community”. During this session each of these individuals had tremendous courage to speak on a very personal topic in front of their peers. Thanks to them for sharing the challenges in their careers to help others.

I hope that I will see many of you at our Summer Conference in Virginia Beach this week. Special thanks go out to our two co-chairs Melissa Rollins, (Surry County) and Carl Rush, (Loudoun County). The agenda looks to be packed with great sessions and speakers. The venue is certain to be great and you will not want to miss it.

It has been my distinct pleasure to serve as the President of this association for now 18 months. My experience has been first class and I thank each of you for your support of me and for your support of VLGMA

I would like to welcome new members,
