VRSA - A Series of Firsts…
By Peter Stephenson, Local Government Specialist, VRSA
VRSA is the first and most financially sound group self-insurance pool in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This unmatched financial strength allows VRSA to provide stable rates and dependable coverages. While hard markets may cause others to cut coverages, VRSA continues to provide protections and remain service-driven to ease our members’ worries.
VRSA was the first Multi-Year Platinum Sponsor of the Virginia Local Government Management Association.
VRSA is the first and only pool in the Commonwealth to provide Risk Management Grants to promote risk management efforts among our members. VRSA’s Members’ Supervisory Board has approved the distribution of more than $3 million in grant funds throughout the last ten years, to be used for the purchase of items that will reduce losses, training, and professional development and education.
VRSA was the first to offer professional management development scholarship grants to our members, and we want to remind VRSA members that we are proud to again offer these scholarships on a first-come, first-served basis for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Applications are being received for this special earmark of Risk Management Grant funds.
These grants have been utilized by leadership to attend programs such as the Virginia Women’s Municipal Leadership Institute; the Leading, Educating and Developing (LEAD) and Senior Executive Institute (SEI) programs at the University of Virginia; and coursework in the Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management at Virginia Tech, among others. With the SEI Alumni program returning right around the corner this fall, there is no time like the present for VRSA members to apply for financial assistance via our website at: www.vrsa.us

According to one of our recent scholarship recipients, “The scholarship application process was simple, and the VRSA staff were extremely helpful.”
VRSA is a steadfast promoter of good governance and the important training of tomorrow's local government leaders today. VRSA and the Virginia Municipal League have entered a new era, and together, will continue to support and enhance Virginia local government and their communities.
